The summer 2017 Heroines issue of Gather is a tribute to the art—and the women behind it—which has made us better. We took food cues from the female directors, television mavericks, creative muses, and childhood literary role models we revere. Plus, we honored musicians whose rebellious spirits are their trademark, paid homage to a few of our favorite groundbreaking visual artists, and mused on everyone from Isadora Duncan and Rei Kawakubo to Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Anne of Green Gables.

The winter 2018 Senses issue of Gather is a journey through sight, smell, taste, sound, touch, and intuition with food as our guide. We dreamt up fantasy sensorial menus inspired by particular nuances of sight (shiny), smell (burnt), taste (bitter), and sound (crunch); explored the profound link between cooking and touch; and considered the intersection of food and our most abstract, but fundamental, sense: intuition. Plus, you’ll find musings on everything from the development of taste in utero to color-blindness and cooking, the eternal appeal of the notoriously stinky durian to our collective need to knead.

The need to get away from it all, if only for the duration of a meal, feels more urgent than ever. With that in mind, for the summer 2018 Getaway edition of Gather we explored the many shapes that an escape might take letting food steer our course. We crafted menus that travel to a fantasy world of daydream desserts; delved into the idea of food as indulgence and self-care, each its own retreat; and used one of the most iconic fictional destinations (Oz) as muse. And because voyaging and eating are intertwined, you’ll also find a collection of meal travelogues from chefs and writers that take you everywhere from a remote Canadian forest to the streets of Jerusalem to a village in Burkina Faso.
